jazz as f*ck: Monk

There's a moment in any Monk recording where the rhythm seems to trip over itself — a note held a beat too long, a chord that lands somewhere you didn't expect, a silence where you thought there'd be sound. It sounds wrong until you realise it's the only right way to play it. That was Monk's whole approach: angular, percussive, deliberately off-kilter, and entirely his own. He wore odd hats on stage, danced mid-solo, and once described his own music as "the only kind of new thing in jazz" — not as a boast, just a fact he saw no reason to soften.

Critics in the '40s and '50s called his playing clumsy before they understood it was architecture. He didn't change to be understood. Everyone else eventually caught up.
